I didn’t know anything about lo-fi music-everything else I’d ever truly loved was glossy and studio perfect: Madonna’s Immaculate Collection and Mary J. I was a freshman at Oberlin, making myself depressing mixtapes to match my mood, and there was nothing that matched my mood better than Either/Or. For a little while, starting around 1998, Elliott Smith and I were the best of friends. Here, Emma Straub revisits Elliott Smith ’s album Either/Or. He knew what he could do and what he couldn't do. Elliott had a great ear for a 3 minute pop song. Hopefully, his music will stand the test of time, it's certainly good enough.
Unfortunatly, Elliott was found dead in 2003, from self inflicted stab wounds. The soundtrack features some of the tracks off here. Elliott's first big project was the soundtrack to the film 'Good Will Hunting'. I can't quite pick up what it was, but there was definitely something about it. He played acoustic guitar very well, and there was just something about his voice. Elliot could sing some pretty high notes and his harmonies were great. What seperates Elliott from his peers (Damien Rice, Jeff Buckley, Nick Drake etc) is his extremely obvious Beatles and Beach Boys influence.
